Haridwar — the city where the registers are kept
What we recover

What's actually written in a family register.

A bahi entry is more than a list of names. The detail in the priest's hand can reveal lineage, native village, life events and the marks of ancestors who made the journey to Haridwar.

Names and lineage

The names of ancestors recorded in the panda's register — often spanning several generations.

Native village and gotra

The ancestral village and family gotra written into the entry, useful for connecting to wider records.

Places of pilgrimage and rites

Notes of visits to Haridwar for last rites, immersions and other ceremonies.

Signatures and personal marks

Where present, signatures or marks left by ancestors at the time of their visit.

The process

Five stages, handled with care.

A typical Haridwar case takes between four and ten weeks, depending on what you can share with us and the condition of the relevant registers.

  1. 1

    Order a package

Choose a Haridwar package and create your case from any country. You will receive a case reference number immediately.

  2. 2

    Complete the family questionnaire

A save-and-return questionnaire captures the names, places, dates and oral history that help our researcher locate the correct register. You can also record audio of elders directly from your phone. If your case includes the register-update package, you can record births, deaths and marriages here too — they are saved into your case and reviewed alongside the rest of your answers when you submit.

  3. 3

    Field research in Haridwar

Your assigned researcher meets the relevant panda families in person, requests the appropriate registers, photographs the entries and confirms the findings on the ground.

  4. 4

    Transcription and translation

Trained translators manually transcribe each relevant page from the original script — often old Devanagari — and translate it into clear English. Every page is reviewed by our office.

  5. 5

    Your secure digital family archive

You receive a final report, photographs of the entries, a translated family tree and any audio you contributed — all kept in your private case, to revisit, share and extend later.
